It can additionally be purchased as a kit for retrofitting existing bikes which is priced at US$49.95. Slidepad Brake System - How it Works Various manufacturers already offer an alternative single brake levers that can accommodate both front and rear brake cables at the same time. The Slidepad was developed primarily for bicycle manufacturers to build into their new models and is already standard equipment on several of latest bikes. Slidepad’s breakthrough innovation is that it allows the front brake force to intelligently change based on the riding situation For example: if the rear wheel begins to lift off the ground as if you grabbed too much front brake which will likely prevent an unwanted accident. So, Why not just use one of those? 2 cables hooked up to one lever means there is always a fixed amount of braking to each front and rear brake and it doesn’t change if you’re on a slippery surface or leaning too far forward, etc. Advantages:Ī lot of manufacturers already offer an alternative – single brake levers that can accommodate both front and rear brake cables at the same time. It pulls on the cable, as the pad moves, thus activating the front brake a split-second after the rear one. Slidepad allows both brakes to be applied with the squeeze of a single lever in such a way that the front brake will never lock up on its own. Second cable attached to the back of that sliding pad loops forward and proceeds up to the front brake. Rider squeezes the one and only handlebar-mounted brake lever which has a traditional-style cable and housing running to the rear brake and as the brake pads engage the forward-turning rim one of them actually slides forward a bit with it: the brake calipers and the other pad remain in place. Slidepad only works with rim brakes, not discs. Slidepad allows both brakes to be applied with the squeeze of a single lever in such a way that the front brake will never lock up on its own. So, as a result to be on the safe side they often only use the rear brake and it was for cyclists such as these that the Slidepad system was created. The only change needed is replacing a single brake pad, and it enables two brakes to be controlled by a single lever. "With the growth in the commuter bike category and the industry's push to get more people on bikes, Slidepad is launching at the right time.We all know the fact that the majority of a bicycle’s stopping power comes from the front brake and many novice and casual riders worry that if they apply that brake too hard they’ll go flying over the handlebars. Slidepad integrates with existing brake hardware. "The technology that Slidepad is bringing to the market is deceptively simple and really smart," said Chip Smith, SOAR Communications president. Slidepad upgrade kits will be available this spring and the company is currently working with key bike manufacturers on September OEM delivery. Slidepad is perfect for comfort, electric, urban, folding, and youth bicycles and is an easy upgrade for existing braking systems. Soon after, they formed Slidepad Technologies and filed a patent. In 2009, Ouellet and Riley entered their original design in Cal Poly's Business Plan Competition and won 1st place. The rotational force of the rear wheel controls modulation of the front brake and reduces the overall amount of hand strength required to stop. The Slidepad system eliminates the risk of over-applying the front brake and causing over-the-bars accidents, all while simplifying the user experience by requiring only a single brake lever. As the rear brake is applied, the special pad slides within the holder on the right side of the bike, pulling on a cable connected to the front calipers stopping the bike. It consists of a special brake pad and holder designed to work with V-brake style calipers. "We hired SOAR Communications to help launch our company because of their experience within the bike industry, as well as in the outdoor recreation industry in general."Ĭo-founder and design engineer Andrew Ouellet invented the Slidepad system in 2008 while a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. "Slidepad provides recreation and commuting cyclists with a safe, effective brake system that alleviates the fear of endoing that many riders worry about," said Brian Riley, president and co-founder of Slidepad Technologies. The Slidepad system eliminates the risk of over-applying the front brake and causing over-the-bars accidents, all while simplifying the user experience by requiring only a single brake lever. Slidepad Technologies is the manufacturer of a patent pending brake system in which the friction of the rear brake actively modulates the front brake giving the rider smooth, controlled stopping power, according to a press release. (I personally do not recommend ever placing your crystals and gemstones in the sunlight, many stones tend to fade their colors in the sun. Try hanging your gemstone necklaces in a tree where the moonlight can cleanse them. The amount of time used varies with the sensitivity of the healer and the amount of material from which the stone needs cleansing. Waning Moons are good times to clear crystals, to dispel old energies, but any time works. Simply place outside from the Full to the New Moon. Moonlight is another way of clearing your gemstones. For those who live by the ocean, salt water can be brought from the beach in a jar, or gently wash them directly in the ocean. Be sure to use sea salt only, table salt contains aluminum and other chemicals. When clearing gemstone necklaces it is best to use the dry sea salt method. If this is the case, leave another day or two in the sea salt. Sometimes a stone may take longer to clear, especially if it has been used in a deep, intense healing. To use dry salt, place the sea salt in a glass or non-plastic container and bury the crystals with the points facing downward into the salt. Place the stones in the solution and allow soaking overnight. To use salt water, mix a tablespoon of sea salt in a glass or ceramic cup of cold water. Salt can be mixed with water or used dry. I highly recommend it for the initial cleansing of a new healing stone and for any time a stone is overloaded with negative energy. I feel it is the most accepted and probably the most powerful method of clearing crystals and stones. It dispels any sort of un-ease and negativity, and is a physical and psychic disinfectant. Sea salt is the most traditional purifying agent in psychic work and healing. There are many methods of cleansing your crystals these include: By learning from the very messages that you receive, SpamSieve is able to block nearly all of your spam, without putting your good messages in the spam mailbox. Philadelphia Defense Attorney for Traffic Warrants Failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights is an especially serious offense with an automatic 60-day suspension and 5 points on your license. Speeding in a work zone similarly has a 15-day suspension. Speeding 31mph or more over the speed limit requires a hearing that can end in a 15-day suspension. In addition to points, some violations have automatic license suspensions or require hearings on whether or not to suspend your license. These are not all of the possible violations that have point assessments but are some of the most common and most severe. Leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage only – 4 points.Speeding 31 mph or more over the speed limit – 5 points.Speeding 26-30mph over the speed limit – 5 points.Speeding 16-25mph over the speed limit – 4 points.Speeding 11-15mph over the speed limit – 3 points.Speeding 6-10mph over the speed limit – 2 points.Running a red light or stop sign – 3 points. The following are some examples of common traffic infractions that put points on your license: Many infractions have a point value assigned to them, but not all. If you can go 12 months straight without an infraction or suspension, 3 points will be removed. Every subsequent suspension adds an additional 5 days per point, but all suspension after the third are automatic one-year suspensions. If you reach a total of 11 points on your license at any time, you will get your license suspended 5 days per point for the first suspension. If you reach 6 points on your license a third time, PennDOT may suspend your license again for 30 days. Again, you have 30 days to complete the exam to have 2 points removed, but these points will not be removed until after the 15-day suspension ends. If you reach 6 points again, you may be summoned for a hearing, where PennDOT may suspend your license for 15 days or order you to take another exam. Passing the test within 30 days gets 2 points taken off your license. If you reach 6 points, your license will be suspended for 30 days or until you pass an exam on safe driving, driving rules, and other safety issues. Many “moving violations” (traffic offenses for actions while driving) come with “points.” These points go on your license and continue to build for each violation you commit. PennDOT (the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation) is responsible for these suspensions, not the court. If you get too many traffic tickets too close together, your license may be suspended, and you will not be able to drive for a period of time. These offenses go on your driving record and can have permanent or long-term effects on your driver’s license and insurance rates. Many traffic offenses come with tickets and fines. They have a large black arrowhead shaped mark on the top of their head and two or three pairs of hornlike scales on the tip of the snout. The scales of the snkae are heavily keeled. Like most of the vipers in the Bitis genus, the Rhinoceros Viper has a distinctive triangular shaped head. The Rhinoceros Viper is a stout, heavy bodied snake that can grow to lengths of 3-4 feet, with females typically growing larger than males. It was first identified in 1802 as Coluber nasicornis. The Rhinoceros Viper has the scientific name Bitis nasicornis. The species within this genus are known for their behaviour of inflating and deflating their bodies while hissing loudly in an attempt to scare off a potential threat. The Gaboon Viper is the largest viper reaching lengths of up to 7 feet while the Namaqua Dwarf Adder is the smallest, growing to less than 1 foot in length. The Bitis genus contains both the largest and smallest species of Viper in the World. However, they can also be found in the Southern parts of the Arabian Peninsula in Yeman, Oman and Southern Saudi Arabia. This genus contains 15 different species of venomous snakes that are primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa. The Rhinoceros Viper belongs to the Bitis genus. The majority of venomous snakes in Australia are from the Elapid family.Įven though Australia has ‘Adders’, such sa the Common Death Adder, these ‘Adders’ are not related to the ‘Viper’ Adders of Africa and actually belong to the Elapid Family. Vipers are found throughout most of the world but an interesting fact about vipers is that they are not native to Australia. This is one of the most popular families of venomous snakes in the world along with the Elapid family. The Rhinoceros Viper belongs to the Viperidae or Viper family of snakes. In the Animal Kingdom, Taxonomy is used as the science and practice of classifying different species and sub-species based on their biological and genetic makeup. For most of the state, more than 40% of the annual precipitation occurs on the 10 wettest days of the year, a percentage that rises to more than 48% in the western portion. Snowfall also varies across the state, ranging from more than 40 inches in the north to about 20 inches in the south. Statewide annual precipitation has ranged from a low of 20.2 inches in 1910 to a high of 47.9 inches in 1993. Iowa’s planting season, which runs from April into June, has been particularly wet in recent years, averaging about 2.8 inches above the long-term average of 12 inches since 2008. Summer and annual precipitation has also been above average since 2005 (Figures 3b and 4), which has benefited crop production but also increased flooding. Spring precipitation has been above average since 1990 (Figure 3a), which can make it difficult for farmers to plant crops. Much of Iowa’s precipitation falls in summer, averaging about 14 inches in the central part of the state. Precipitation varies widely across Iowa, with the southeastern portion of the state receiving around 38 inches annually compared to only 26 inches in the northwest. Data: (a) nClimDiv, (b, c, d) GHCN-Daily from 49 long-term stations. The number of very cold nights has been below average since 1990, except for the 2010–2014 period. Due to extreme drought and poor land management practices, the summers of the 1930s remain the warmest on record. The number of very hot days has been below average since 1990, while the number of warm nights shows no clear trend. Summer temperatures have generally been near average since 1995. The horizontal black lines show the long-term (entire period) averages: (a) 71.5☏, (b) 7 days, (c) 10 nights, (d) 20 nights. Bars show averages over 5-year periods (last bar is a 6-year average). The winter warming trend is reflected in a below average number of very cold nights since 1990, with the exception of the 2010–2014 period (Figure 2d).įigure 2: Observed (a) summer (June–August) average temperature, (b) annual number of very hot days (maximum temperature of 95☏ or higher), (c) annual number of warm nights (minimum temperature of 70☏ or higher), and (d) annual number of very cold nights (minimum temperature of 0☏ or lower) for Iowa from (a) 1895 to 2020 and (b, c, d) 1900 to 2020. This lack of summer warming is reflected in a below average number of very hot days (Figure 2b) and no overall trend in warm nights (Figure 2c). Warming has been concentrated in winter and fall, while summers have not warmed substantially (Figure 2a), a feature characteristic of much of the Midwest. The hottest year on record was 2012, with an annual average temperature of 52.1°, which is 4.5☏ above the long-term (1895–2020) average. Increases in humidity may be one cause of this asymmetric warming between night and day. The warming is due to increases in nighttime minimum temperatures daytime maximum temperatures, however, show no trend. Temperatures in the 2000s have been higher than in any other historical period, with the exception of the early 1930s Dust Bowl era. Temperatures in Iowa have risen more than 1☏ since the beginning of the 20th century (Figure 1). As a result, its climate is characterized by wide-ranging temperatures. Iowa’s location in the interior of North America and the lack of mountains to the north and south expose the state to incursions of bitterly cold air masses from the Arctic in the winter and warm, humid air masses from the Gulf of Mexico in the summer. Less warming is expected under a lower emissions future (the coldest end-of-century projections being about 2☏ warmer than the historical average green shading) and more warming under a higher emissions future (the hottest end-of-century projections being about 12☏ warmer than the hottest year in the historical record red shading). Historically unprecedented warming is projected during this century. Observed temperatures are generally within the envelope of model simulations of the historical period (gray shading). Shading indicates the range of annual temperatures from the set of models. Temperatures in Iowa (orange line) have risen more than 1☏ since the beginning of the 20th century. Projected changes for 2006–2100 are from global climate models for two possible futures: one in which greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase (higher emissions) and another in which greenhouse gas emissions increase at a slower rate (lower emissions).
